THE LORD'S SUPPER

The Lord's Supper is currently being distributed through a special dispenser for the bread and individual cups for the wine. During the distribution, the congregation is ushered into a single line to receive the elements. If you are not comfortable receiving the elements in this manner, the individually wrapped chalice cups are still available on the Narthex table. You are welcome to use them until our current supply runs out. If you have any questions, please contact Pastor Jake.

Every week we offer a number of opportunities to study the Scriptures, explore the depths of God's grace, and grow in our understanding of our faith. Our classes are light-hearted, engaging, and welcoming. Come join us! If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to email us.

"Discuss This" is a weekly book discussion lead by our Ministries Coordinator, Paul Koppelmann. We are currently reading and discussing "Patience & Perfection: Finding Peace in God's Plan for You!" by Daniel E. Paavola. Here's a snippet about the book: "In this life, we’ll never be perfect. We take one step toward perfection and two steps back, losing confidence in ourselves with each movement. We might lose patience with ourselves—can’t we just be perfect already!?—but God gently smiles and continues walking with us. God is slowly but consistently sanctifying you. He is patient with you. He loves you. And He declares you perfect in Christ.

Time: Tuesdays, 11:00am and Thursdays, 7:00pm

    Location: Connecting Room (downstairs)

    Leader: Pastor Jake Allstaedt

    Current Topic: Luther's Small Catechism

Written by Martin Luther in 1529, the Small Catechism provides a brief, clear summary of God’s Word on the essentials of the Christian faith. In question-and-answer format, it explores the Six Chief Parts of Christian Doctrine and includes daily prayers, a table of duties for Christians in their various callings, and a guide for Christians as they prepare to receive Holy Communion. An explanation designed to help readers understand and apply Luther’s Small Catechism has accompanied editions of the catechism since the early days of Lutheranism. The 2017 edition offers an updated and expanded explanation, tackling issues prevalent in our culture today. Come learn and explore with us!

Our facility

  • Elevator

We have an elevatorOur main entrance only has stairs, but we have an elevator located on the Willis Avenue side of our building. You can't miss it. Our elevator will give you access right into the Sanctuary (top level) and into our Fellowship Hall (bottom level). If you have any questions, ushers and greeters will be more than happy to help you out. We'll give you the code to open the door.

  • Nursery

We also have a nursery! As explained above, we love to have children in worship. However, if you need to take your child out of the sanctuary for any reason, we have a newly-renovated nursery at bottom of our main staircase. At the bottom of the stairs the nursery is your first door on the left. Our nursery has a changing table, toys, books, a table and chairs, and a wide open space for children to play. A speaker will let you know what's happening in worship.

  • Parking

We have a parking lot! You don't have to worry about finding a parking spot on the street or a long walk to our building. Our parking lot is conveniently located directly across from the main entrance to our building on Cornell Street. We have plenty of parking spaces as well as visitor parking and handicapped parking. Parking is also available on Willis Avenue where our elevator is located.

CHILDREN in worship

We love having kids in worship! Seriously, we encourage kids of all ages to be in worship. It doesn't matter how much they cry or how fidgety they are, we highly value the presence of children in God's house. What better way for them to learn the service, grow in their faith, and understand the importance of worship than to be in God's house? Jesus loves little children and He bids them to come to Him. We know this and takes it to heart.

Of course, if you need to take your child out of worship for any reason, we have a nursery conveniently located downstairs. We also have books and a few toys behind the back left pew if you need those as well.

what to wear

We do not have a dress code at St. John's. God's "dress code" is perfect righteousness, and He freely gives those clothes by faith through His Son, Jesus, in your baptism: "For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ" (Galatians 3:27). In Christ, you already have the right "dress code"!

Honestly, you will not be looked at differently for dressing down or dressing up. When you come to St. John's, you'll probably see a wide variety of clothing. Some people will wear a suit and a tie, while others will wear shorts and a t-shirt (depending on the weather). Whatever you choose to wear, we would simply ask that you remember that you are coming to a place set aside for worship.

welcome cards

In the back of every pew is a Welcome Card that has a place for your information. There's also a place for you to request more information about St. John's or have our pastor contact you. On the back of the Welcome Card you'll find our communion policy and a place for prayer requests. Please take the time to fill this card out and hand it to an usher at the time of communion distribution. If we already have your information or if you don't want to share your information, filling out the "Name(s)" section will be just fine!

What to expect

When you come to worship at St. John's, you will experience a little bit of "heaven on earth," a time and place set apart from everything else in the world where God's grace in Jesus is received and celebrated. Everything in our worship is counter-cultural, from the aesthetics and songs to the message and the words we speak. In worship, God gives us what we can't get anywhere else, especially the gift of Christ's body and blood in Holy Communion. Our culture is fast-paced and performance-driven, but our worship causes you to slow down and rest in the grace of Jesus. Above all, expect to leave forgiven and free.

WEEKLY WoRSHIP SERVICES

St. John's offers two different services at two convenient times in two different locations. Our Wednesday night service has the same theme and message as the following Sunday. Both services offer weekly Holy Communion and a message filled with grace that is sure to leave you free and at peace. Choose one that works for you!

  • Wednesdays, 7:00pm

LENTen SERIES: Eyes on jesus

"O come, let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God"
(Gradual for Lent, based on Hebrews 12:2).

When the characters in the Passion narrative look at Jesus, what do they see? In most cases, people misunderstood who He is and what He was doing. In some cases, by faith, people recognized Him aright. Our Lenten series this year, "Eyes on Jesus," is based on the Passion according to St. Mark. We will examine how the various people around Jesus viewed Him—and how we should view Him. We will “fix our eyes” on what Jesus has done to save us from our sins by His holy, precious blood and innocent sufferings and death, and celebrate what God sees on account of His work: our justification for His sake.

Join us for our Midweek Lenten Services!
